The current, beloved building has served its purpose, and a new middle school is what we can afford. Building a new middle school will allow grades 6-8 to be in the same building again. It will also create room for growth at the intermediate and elementary levels by moving 6th grade out of the intermediate school. The budget for the new school includes new fixtures, furniture, and equipment. The estimated cost of building the new middle school is $41 million.
Where is the new Middle School going to go?
The FSD was able to purchase land without including it in the bond! The middle school will be built on the same campus (where the red pin is) as the elementary and intermediate schools. This project will include a major refresh of the campus and upgrades to the on-site facilities. The current football field, track, and surrounding areas will be updated to allow grades K-8 to use the facilities for daily school activities and competitions.
What about the current parking facilities at the Elementary and Intermediate? How will traffic flow to improve safety and efficiency?
Once the bond is passed, a traffic study will be conducted to determine the best design for creating a safe and secure flow of traffic for all three schools. The FSD has set aside funds to redo the parking lots at the elementary and middle schools, but the work will not be done until the study is complete
Passing the bond would allow for the track to be redone and the football field to be regraded. It would also include a better drainage system and updated infrastructure to extend the track’s lifespan. This community centerpiece needs the work! In the spring, the track sees constant use, and we are dangerously close to it being unsafe for competition. The wear and tear of Idaho weather has taken its toll. While the track is being redone, we will also regrade the football field to eliminate the large crown on one end.
What about the other components of the track and field?
Safety is the main priority in redoing the track and field. If the budget allows, we will assess the condition of the jumping lanes, pole vault pit, high jump area, and throwing arenas, addressing safety concerns first. The estimated cost of renovating the track and field is $1.5 million.
Thoughts on the facility.
The bond committee considered adding a turf field instead of re-sodding the football field during regrading. While this would have solved many space issues—such as allowing the field to be used for both soccer and football—it was ultimately deemed not a necessity due to the additional $1 million cost
Raise your hand if you despise navigating the parking lot when dropping off your student! The $9.4 million allocated for the high school would include a redesigned parking lot, upgrades to the CTE facilities, and the construction of a new multipurpose facility.
How would the parking lot change?
The high school parking lot was not designed to accommodate the current volume of traffic. To address this, the parking lot would be relocated to the north side of the high school. While this will require moving the soccer field, it will create a more efficient space for student parking and allow for a redesigned traffic flow. Once the bond is approved, a traffic study would be conducted to determine the best design for our space.
What is a multipurpose facility?
The multipurpose facility would include a new gym, classroom space, much-needed storage, and a new weight room or wrestling room. How does building a space like this benefit the community? Many may see it as just a gym, but that’s not a bad thing. From October to January, Filer’s gyms are packed every night! In addition to the high school and middle school teams, over 200 kids participated in recreational basketball last winter. Gyms are vital community spaces—just ask the 50-and-up Reunion group, which, along with several other groups, uses the high school’s facilities every summer.
More gym space means kindergartners won’t have to practice at 7 or 8 p.m. The added classrooms also help address the high school’s current space limitations. Since building a new high school isn’t an option, this solution allows us to repurpose and expand space for students.
Weightlifting and wrestling are incredibly valuable skills that our students build daily. However, our current spaces are inadequate. After the bond is passed, the final design will determine what to build and how to repurpose the current weight room.
What about the Career Technical Education (CTE) Building?
If you’ve ever bought flowers in May from our floral and plant science programs, you know how much pride our students take in their work. Upgrading this space would allow all of those classes to take place in one centralized location. Currently, our dedicated teacher is stretched between three different spaces. While she never complains, this would be a great opportunity to provide a more efficient and functional learning environment. Passage of this bond would also upgrade the safety and efficiency of our welding program. Our goal is to create the most flexible and safest spaces possible to keep up with the needs of CTE.
